The Good Girl Meets Goldilocks

No matter where I have travelled in the world, I ask women the same question.  “Who was raised to be a Good Girl?”  And no matter whether I am in Minneapolis, Mumbai, Mexico City or Moscow – almost everyone raises their hand. Although the story differs from place to place – it goes something like this:

  • Good girls shouldn't be too ambitious.

  • Good girls watch what they eat.

  • Good girls shouldn’t speak up.

  • Good girls don’t invite themselves to the party

  • Good girls can dream big as long as they play small.

The problem is that the game has been rigged.  It’s the game of unspoken rules where women need to play “not to lose” instead of “play to win”.  Except when we play to win in a masculine world, the good girl meets Goldilocks – she is told she is “too this” or “too that” but rarely “just right”.

Let's start playing a new game, our game. Reflect on how being a "good girl" has kept you from living your dreams to the fullest. Download the worksheet and fill in your answers!
